This town is a little utopia in the middle of nowhere

There’s no police, no crime, and no unemployment in the remote town of Marinaleda in Andalusia, one of the poorest regions in Spain. Only a couple of thousand people live here, and yet they managed to build their very own ’social-democratic utopia.’

Most of this became possible thanks to the local mayor, Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo. In 2008, when the country was going through a turbulent financial crisis, Gordillo organized raids on supermarkets and then redistributed wealth to the poor: oil, rice, beans were given for free to those who couldn’t afford them.

Gordillo has been to jail seven times, went on marches and mass hunger strikes, and after 12 years of persistent struggle he became the mayor and the main creator of a self-described social-democratic utopia. He has built a town where there is enough food and other necessities for everyone.

There is now a farmers’ co-operative, which employs almost all of the villagers. Profit is divided equally among them, so their monthly wages come to about 1,200 euros ($1,600) per person.

All of those who’d like to build their own house can do so for free. There is a spacious allowance of 192 square meters per family, and materials and qualified workers are provided by the town hall.

The only condition is that after construction, families pay 15 euros per month for the rest of their lives, with the agreement that the house cannot be sold for private gain.

’We need to rethink our values, the consumer society, and the value we place on money, selfishness and individualism,’ says Gordillo. ’Marinaleda is a small example, and we want this experience to extend throughout the world.’
